THE SA FUTURE TRUST

Champions for Small Business

ABOUT US

The South African Future Trust (the SA Future Trust) is a champion for small business and enables and supports small businesses by working with various partners in South Africa.

In March 2020 the SA Future Trust was established with a R1 billion donation from Oppenheimer Generations Foundation to support small businesses through the Covid-19 crisis. The SA Future Trust extended direct financial support to businesses so that their employees could continue to receive an income through the lockdown period. This was done by providing interest-free loans to qualifying SMMEs to enable selected employees to receive weekly payments of R750 for a 15-week relief period.

The SA Future Trust continues to focus on accelerating growth and job creation in the small, medium and micro-enterprise (SMME) sector. We believe in the power of the spirit of South African entrepreneurs and their ability to make a difference in South Africa, because they always make things happen. We believe that by investing in small business, we are investing in people. We are helping to create jobs and we are investing in the growth of South Africa.

Learn about the Optimised Operating Model

In the diverse and dynamic African business landscape, there exists a tremendous opportunity to build resilient businesses that achieve both financial success and operational excellence.

As you will know from your own experience operating companies in Africa, businesses can thrive by finding ways to break free from “frictional costs”. These are the non-revenue generating activities that weigh businesses down (e.g. inefficient production or sales processes). Removing them not only directly boosts profitability, but also brings wider spillover benefits.

This is because tackling frictional costs means engaging the people in your organisation to think about the goal they are working toward, and equipping them with the right information and tools to support them in doing so. Empowering them with the autonomy to make the most of their expertise, and rewarding them for doing so, is the key to unlocking this ownership mindset.

The Optimised Operating Model (OOM) is an approach that can guide you in making these changes, and reaping the benefits.

Partner Organisations
The SA Future Trust partnered with four non-bank financial intermediaries (NBFIs) from 2021 to reinvest funds and resources into accelerating SMME-sector growth.
