Celebrity chef Jan's restaurant in France awarded Michelin star 8th year in a row

Michelin star chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen set out to share South African cuisine with the world when he opened Restaurant JAN in Nice, France, in 2013.

As of 2023, in its 10th year of existence, Restaurant JAN has been awarded a Michelin star eight times in a row.

“Since we first gave South African cuisine a world stage when we received our first star, the annual Michelin awards in France have been a big deal for us,” Chef Jan wrote in a tribute post on Instagram.

The Michelin Star Awards took place at the Strasbourg Music and Congress Centre in Alsace on Monday. During the ceremony, 630 restaurants were awarded the coveted prize – 29 Three Star restaurants, 75 Two Star restaurants, and 526 One Star restaurants.

“Attending the awards in Strasbourg and having JAN’s star renewed for the eighth year in a row, it dawned on me what a privilege it is to be a part of such a small and carefully selected group of culinary magicians,” Chef Jan added in his lengthy post.

In addition to Restaurant JAN, the celebrity chef also has Restaurant Klein JAN – his first establishment in South Africa, which opened in 2021 and is located in the Kalahari.

In 2019, Chef Jan launched his first TV series, JAN, which aired on VIA (DStv 147).

After three seasons, Chef Jan introduced a spin-off titled JAN RSVP in 2022, which sees the celeb chef invite special guests to dine with him in a newly renovated 1712 farmhouse situated in a lavender field on home soil.
